Many thanks to Gary Murray for his article in the new issue (with Everton players on the cover) about W&H and the ground saga:
"The ground...will now become 54 houses. It was never the ideal place to view football. You had to watch across an athletics track and many of the seats in the main stand had been rendered unusable by incontinent pigeons...But it was home, echoing with games past, with FA Cup giant-killing and with a record crowd of 10 000 at the Lane for an Amateur Cup tie in 1952."
And he quotes one of the very few - as far as I'm aware - public pronouncements of Mr Smith during the whole business.
