I remember it well - especially the replay! Goldstone rapper, when you say infamous for Albion fans, do you mean because of the result of the replay, 0-4 to Walton and Hersham, or because of the behaviour of the Brighton fans towards the end of the game and afterwards? I was in fear of my life!

I say 'infamous' as Brighton were clearly outplayed and survived by the skin of their teeth. Not very nice for a League side to be outclassed on the pitch! The name of Walton and Hersham sends a shudder down the spine of many Albion fans watching games in that era, and not just for the replay result. In the replay, i think Brighton had much more of the game, although the final score was, for Albion supporters at least, much, much worse. Nowadays, both games are viewed with a mixture of horror and fascination. Yesterday an Albion fan scanned the match programme to the first game here www.flickr.com/photos/75238685@N02/sets/72157638009198066/showAs you may know, Colin Woffinden was in the Leatherhead side that dumped his former club Brighton out of the FA Cup the following season. As for the rest, how long did that great Walton and Hersham side stay together for? I've seen that footage of Leeds v Wimbledon from 1975 with Bassett and Donaldson playing for the Dons. Did Allen Batsford take any others when he joined Wimbledon? Thanks.

He also took Billy Edwards as well as signing Roger Connell and Keiron Somers from Hendon who had both played in the Amateur Cup final for Walton and Hersham the previous season. When Batsford left half the team went to Wimbledon and the other half to Leatherhead and Walton and Hersham sadly were relegated the following season. I seem to remember Brian Clough describing us as "donkeys against thoroughbreds". At that time we were one of the best non-league sides in the country, if not the best

Well, Clough was right, but only if he switched those descriptions around! That was a pretty terrible Brighton side at the time, that would get trounced 8-2 at home to Bristol Rovers a few days later, and were in danger of being relegated for the second time in two seasons. Certainly weren't 'thoroughbreds', despite Clough's neat turn of phrase. He also said 'Walton and Hersham' sounded more like a branch of solicitors than a football club. If the quality of those Wimbledon players who had played for Walton & Hersham is anything to go by, I don't doubt what you say about W&H having possibly the best non-league side at the time. What an achievement to win a cup competition without conceding a goal in any game. Out of interest, do you remember much about what Colin Woffinden was like as a player? He later wrote this book: thegoldstonewrap.com/2013/09/27/skilful-soccer-by-stephen-ford-and-colin-woffinden/

Ray Road sound like they had a superb educational system back then, you bunked off of school midweek to watch the Swan's play Brighton Rich, your teacher/Dad would get locked up for that heavily fined today get criminalised if you take your kids out of school today. I think l prefer the old school system educational trips, sadly all we got was Ford Dagenham trips watching them assemble old Cortina's in the 60's.
Little Clive Foskett was a prolific goal scorer for the Swans, was a very underrated under appreciated player at he time was responsible for lot of the important goals in that era. It was very sad to see Fossie on the substitutes bench at Wembley, if anybody deserved a place in the side on the day it was Clive.
