Was told this was done by the fire brigade because of the fire risk and the danger of evacuating it.....
1. It's metal and concrete 2. About 20 people go in it and there's a great big football pitch in front of it 3. It's never previously been a problem for the past 100 years!

The council would be responsible for the repairs being the landlord but for some reason they are refusing to fix the problems. I wonder why.....

That's a bummer.... it's part of my ritual to spend one half on the bank and the other in the far stand, and to complete a circumambulation. My karma will be seriously disturbed this afternoon if I can't do that. And of course having to pay an extra ten bob to go in the main stand if it's too wet - assuming there's room!
Oh dear...
Pity there is no Club statement on the website, but that's what one expects now.

There can not be a club statement due to the ongoing discussions regarding the ground. I've made a statement on the website regarding this. 50p to get into the stand, hopefully not needed enjoy the game. The fans on Tuesday night were superb. Keep cheering the lads on good or bad

Keep cheering the lads on good or bad No, I suggest you're using that reason too easily. Something bland like: "It has been necessary to close the far stand while health and safety concerns are looked at, and we hope to re-open it soon after taking advice from the proper authorities".... or whatever is close enough to the truth - would acknowledge the situation while being bland and inoffensive - and would stop idle speculation for a while.

Elmbridge Borough Council, in a letter dated 09 October, tell me:
(a) that there was a site visit from SCC Fire & Rescue's Steve Viney on 2 August; (b) that he "... identified a potential issue..." (c) that they told the Club that the Council "have been informed <by who?> that the covered terrace requires certification in order to become a regulated stand. At present <2 August> it does not comply. As landlords and in the interests of public safety we are obliged to close the stand with immediate effect"
Elmbridge BC further tell me that on 6 August they wrote to both the Football Club and to the Athletics Club requesting informatiopn on those clubs' "safety operating procedures which will include fire safety, crowd management and event management etc". As at 9 October neither club had supplied the information requested.
The above information obtained under Freedom of Information legislation.

I asked the Council some follow up questions under Freedom of Information
Q: What steps has the Council, as landlord of Stompond Lane, taken to bring the stand back into repair....? A: Since we were advised by Steve Viney of Surrey Fire & Rescue on 2 August.... the Council have undertaken no work to bring the stand back into repair. The stand has been boarded up and blocked from access to the public for reasons of public safety. This has been carried out in consultation with botyh the athletics club and the football club.
Q: If no such steps have yet been taken, does the Council regard itself as obliged to take them in due course? A: We are still consulting with the athletics and football clubs and until such consultations are completed it would not be possible to comment on this.
It also emerges that there is nothing in writing from Steve Viney of the Fire Service, it was verbal on 2 August, and it surprises me that there is apparently nothing in writing to confirm this nearly three months later. Time for some FoI from the Fire Service, methinks.

Don't they just!!! Typical Council who decided long ago they wanted us out and instead of repairing the roof have found a job for some building firm to smack up boards, no doubt with a nice back hander for the council official concerned! Common sense not their best virtue and why, several years ago did they fail in their duty as landlords to carry out repairs to the roofing which were so obviously needed! So they were quite happy for the public to go in the stand with a rusty leaking roof, and now they want our club out so they can get their greedy paws on the profit from housing development, they decide to board up the neglect and hide it from initial view! Disgraceful..lets hope the next local elections see these vermin kicked out!!!!

Well said Fred though I still firmly believe the Club could of dealt with this stand issue a lot better than they have.
Sad to say I will not be attending any games at The Lane whilst my favourite place to watch from is sadly unused, perhaps that means I've seen my last game there at a place I've been coming to since 1976, all a bit heartbreaking, some wonderful memories.....
